Kingfisher
Add bursts of deep blues and robust oranges to your kitchen or bedroom with this print of the agile and colorful kingfisher.
Brightly colored, perched quietly among the flowers, this bringer of calmness is a reminder of the halcyon days of the past.
The kingfisher is known by the Greeks as the halcyon bird, a name that comes from the story of the goddess Alcyone. She and her husband Ceyx, as legend has it, referred to themselves as Zeus and Hera, which angered the real god Zeus. In a fit of rage, He killed Ceyx by sinking his ship with a bolt of lightning.
Distraught, grieving, and feeling ashamed, Alcyone threw herself into the sea and drowned. In a moment of compassion, the gods turned both Alcyone and Ceyx into beautiful bright blue and orange “halcyon birds”.
The new kingfishers went on to nest floating deep in the Mediterranean Sea. The gods granted them a period of 7 days before and after the winter solstice where there would be fair weather and no waves so they could raise their broods. These 14 days became known as the halcyon days.
In an ever busier world, the serene backdrop and brightly plumed kingfisher can bring a sense of peace and calmness to any room. Let it take you back to your own halcyon days and serve as a reminder of the good times in your life.
Go you and, with such glorious hues
Live with proud peacocks in green parks
On lawns as smooth as shining glass
Let every feather show its marks
